potential customers. It is already apparent that a variety of strategies are being
adopted in order to consolidate existing
strengths or to gain a more secure niche
market foothold.
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is already widely recognized as a major European cargo gateway. It’s objective now,
according to Enno Osinga, Schiphol’s
senior vice president cargo, is to add
strength in depth to the airport’s cargo
infrastructure.
“Our business is no longer about selling direct to the carriers,” says Osinga.
“It is about putting in place the second
line support services such as distribution centers and on airport facilities for
logistics service providers. If they are
there, then the airlines will make a natural choice.”
In terms of on airport facilities for
logistics service providers, Panalpina has
already opened a dedicated new cargo
building at Schiphol-East making it the
airport’s first logistics provider with direct access to the tarmac.
Fellow logistics service provider,
Rhenus Logistics, is set to follow with a
similar on airport facility.
Enno Osinga says Schiphol is also
placing more emphasis on facilitating

the smooth flow of cargo at the airport.
At the core of this investment program
is the airport’s Smartgate project.
It has already begun to be rolled out
with the recent launch of Cargo Checkpoint. A unique initiative by the Dutch
gateway, Cargo Checkpoint for the first
time combines air cargo security and customs checks at a single central location.
The pilot project at the airport has
been launched jointly by Air France
Cargo-KLM Cargo, the Dutch Customs
Administration and Schiphol Group.
“The project combines multiple
screening checks at one central location, reduces time needed to process
freight and meets the strictest security
demands,” says Enno Osinga.
• All of Scandinavia as well as Northern Europe can be reached by overnight

‘A Visionary Project’
“The wider Schiphol Smartgate initiative is a visionary project aimed at
optimizing cargo handling at Amsterdam
Airport Schiphol by integrating the cargo handling and inspection process. The
aim is to improve speed, reliability and
safety in the air cargo chain and further
reduce costs.”
Copenhagen Airport in Denmark has
a well-earned reputation as the prime
cargo gateway for the Scandinavian market. It is a reputation further enhanced in
